At the heart of the Côte sous le Vent, backing onto the mountain and facing the sea, Pointe Noire is a small village with a pleasant atmosphere and numerous curiosities. The village of Pointe Noire owes its name to the chain of bluish black granite volcanic rocks which raised the northern point of the village by falling into the sea.
Specialised in woodwork since the XVIII century with the settlement of marine carpenters and long sawyers, Pointe Noire is a very peaceful market town, with a long main street running through it bordered with businesses and wooden Creole houses. 
Here, time seems to pass more slowly and encourages nonchalance.
You have to remember that until the Traversée road was cut (in 1967) which crossed over the mountain through the Deux Mamelles pass, Pointe Noire was a heavily withdrawn village and getting between Pointe à Pitre was a long, fastidious journey. From then on, the village was no more than half an hour from the economic heart of the Island. This opening considerably revitalized its tourist trade in which it prides itself on several sites of interest for visitors where it relives the region's the economic and cultural past.
